Îlet Chancel rises five hundred meters offshore from Le François, the last refuge in the Caribbean for the Lesser Antillean iguana, a species that vanished from mainland Martinique in the nineteenth century when mongooses were introduced to control plantation pests. The islet's seven hectares of dry forest and volcanic rock now harbor roughly nine hundred of the endangered reptiles, their numbers slowly recovering under protection protocols enforced since 1995. Navigational charts from the 1740s mark the site as "Ilet du Chancelier," a corruption that endured through centuries of sail and steam. Chancel's shoreline presents a problem for tour operators. The iguanas, some exceeding a meter in length, cluster near the two authorized landing zones where visitors deliver fruit scraps and vegetable donations overseen by the Office National des Forêts. Guides enforce a two-meter approach distance, and flash photography is prohibited during nesting season from March through July. The reptiles' prehistoric profile and rust-orange dewlaps make them the most photographed fauna in the Lesser Antilles after the Guadeloupean raccoon. By midday the anchorage swells with catamarans from Fort-de-France and smaller craft from Vauclin. The sandbar at Joséphine's Bath accommodates perhaps forty visitors at once before the seabed trampling becomes visible. Tour schedules stagger arrivals, but weekend congestion remains a recurring complaint in maritime authority reports filed since 2022.
